It's a reflective time as the relative quiet after harvest sets in and we begin the period in which our wines will mature in barrels. Once things begin to take shape in the cellar, we'll evaluate how best to assemble these individual barrels into finished wines. We'll then announce the wines we expect to offer for the vintage and their anticipated release dates.
2008 was a year of extremes for many vineyards in northern California, from the late frosts of the spring (some of the hardest in 35 years) to forest fires blanketing vineyards with haze throughout parts of the summer. Even as things began to calm later in the summer, ten days of intense heat suddenly raced some vineyards past the finish line. Somehow, in the face of each of these extremes, and in the care of our thoughtful growers, each of our vineyards amazingly emerged with great promise for the vintage. After many twists, our 2008 harvest began at the exact same time, almost to the hour, as in 2007 with our Syrah from Casatierra Vineyard. After the heat September portended at its start, we saw mild and steady weather during which flavors were gently able to peak. Following the Syrah, we picked our Pinot Noir and Viognier from Fairview Road Ranch and Saralee's Vineyard all within a week of each other at the end of the month and into October. A warm and dry October ripened our Roussanne until October 22.
